Delhi Daredevils have appointed South African all rounder JP Duminy as their captain for the upcoming 8th edition of the Pepsi IPL. Duminy has been part of the side since their revamp undergone last year and was one of the few standout performers last season. He was however, retained by the franchise as they let go other star players like Kevin Pietersen, Murali Vijay, Dinesh Karthik, etc.
“I’m grateful for the support and belief from the franchisee. It’s an absolute privilege to lead such a talented mix of players. I am excited about the season ahead and sincerely hope, we will be able to turn around the fortunes of DD in the upcoming IPL season”. said Duminy upon being announced as the captain of Delhi.
Duminy will lead a side which is no less of a firepower themselves, featuring the likes of their recent marquee buy Yuvraj Singh, Angelo Mathews, Mohammed Shami, Zaheer Khan, Quinton De Kock, Nathan Coulter-Nile, etc.
Delhi coach Gary Kirsten, who is also a coach for JP’s national side, also gave his views on him. “JP is the right choice to lead the team for the upcoming season.He has the necessary experience and demeanour to take the team forward. I have seen him progress and mature as a player and leader through the years with the South African national team. I look- forward to working with him in the upcoming IPL season”.
Duminy will be coming off South Africa’s amazing World Cup campaign where he played a key role in getting his country till the World Cup semi-finals, smashing a century and bagging a few wickets against Zimbabwe in their first game, to clinching a hat-trick in their quarter-final clash against Sri Lanka.
The fans will be hoping he continues his ongoing purple patch and lead the Delhi Daredevils to glory this season. They begin their IPL campaign with an away game against the Chennai Super Kings on the 9th of April.
